Britannia Bay, named after the wreck that sank here in 1826, is wrapped in a stretch of some 7 km of pristine sand, ideal for that early morning stroll.

In season it is home to mating and calving Southern Right whales and other cetaceans such as Heaviside’s dolphin. This small creature’s distribution is limited worldwide to
Southern Africa’s west coast, the nutrient-rich Benguela current being its food source and the daily bread for the local fishermen whose nets pull in pilchards and haarders. In winter the hardy fisherfolk pull in line after line of snoek (of the barracuda family), which are prepared by their womenfolk.

Down in the working harbour try bargaining with the Slaamse and maybe you’ll be lucky enough to buy one to cook over the coals for your supper!

Raised in a country community – Darling, in fact (of Evita Bezuidenhout fame) – Ronnie and Callie retired to their dream house by the sea. “Retire! She chuckles, “I’ve never been so busy. Entertaining the guests that discover this gem of a getaway bay is a fulltime occupation.” The visitors have become her hobby and she loves nothing more than to hear what life in Ireland, for example, is about; for come they do - from all corners of the globe.

The self-catering upstairs apartment can accommodate four people in two bedrooms, (the first with double bed, the second with single beds). There’s a full bathroom and all linen is provided. “But,” asks Ronnie, “please bring your own beach towels.”

The private sun deck provides panoramic views over the bay and its abundant marine and birdlife make it the ideal spot from which to watch the setting sun. “It’s a great place to enjoy
one of the local wines. I last counted over 40 estates within a day’s drive from here”

The lounge is just the place to sit back and relax after a day exploring the region and the kitchenette is well equipped for the preparation of the
evening meal.
“And you won’t miss out on your favourite Soapie”

Rock lobster is a West Coast wonder and what better feast than a freshly boiled kreef straight from the sea? But, be warned! A licence from the local authorities is needed to harvest this
seasonal delicacy.

Guests are encouraged to visit the nearby Fossil Park with its cache of 5 000 million year-old bones. Or take a chance with Lady Luck at the casino at Club Mykonos in Langebaan.

The area is splendid for walking, particularly in spring after good rains when the veld flower displays are quite spectacular. Day visitors’ rates apply for the use of the facilities at the nearby Shelley Point Hotel, Country Club & Spa, which includes a nine-hole golf course and tennis. There’s also a wellness centre and hairdresser for that well earned pampering.

If it’s nature, we’ve got it; if it’s fun, we invented it. It’s all here for the taking.
