Hout Bay means “Wood Bay” it was heavily wooded in the old days but it still maintains a rural feel. Surrounded by mountains the bay has a white sandy beach and on its western tip there is a harbor where you can buy fresh fish, have a meal or drink and watch the boats come in. From there the glass bottomed boat will take you to Seal Island . There are some lovely, good quality and inexpensive local arts and crafts to purchase when you have finished your trip. Water sports can be enjoyed there are jet skiing and canoeing facilities. In Hout Bay the World of Birds is an interesting 3 hour tour, where you can see every breed of bird including ostriches and the marmoset monkeys you can even touch.
Top up your idle days with some exercise walking through the forest or along the mountain passes, or go to Sandy Bay and visit the old shipwreck washed onto the beach. Other options are a visit to one of the many riding schools or a tour of the informal township. More sedentary pursuits include making your own pottery and then watching the professionals at work. One can spend an evening listening to the cosy and informative fire side chats at the Hout Bay museum.
A 10 min drive from Hout Bay will take you into Camps Bay another trendy beach lined with palm trees. There is also Clifton beach where the babes hang out about 15 mins away. 15 mins in the other direction takes you to Constantia, where Mark Thatcher and Earl Spencer lived. Here you can do wine tasting and visit the vineyards of the local wine farms. Kirstenbosch botanical gardens are close by and well worth a visit and they do open air concerts there on summer Sunday evenings..
25 min drive along the coast with its breathtaking views takes you into the heart of Cape Town. Here you can take a boat to Robben Island where Mandela was imprisoned. You can take a cable car up Table Mountain or you can visit the many shops at the Waterfront. Alternatively if you are feeling lazy you can just lie by the pool enjoy and later go into the village for dinner with its many bars and restaurants. We call Hout Bay the Republic Of Hout Bay because once there you are hard pushed to leave it.
