Why book at Dèjá View?

It's a pretty name. Roughly translated, it means "A view already", which was true of the charming enclave in which it was built in the '70s – situated on the lower slopes of the mountain, all 20 of the white-walled houses, with their green woodwork and grey-tiled roofs, have a view of the yacht and naval harbour.

In a cobbled enclave just 39 steps from the shops and eating places that line the main road in the historic naval centre of Simon’s Town, Dèjá View offers three bedrooms (two of them with a harbour view), two bathrooms, a cloakroom, spacious living rooms, a fully-equipped kitchen, a laundry area with tumble drier as well as washing machine, and lock-up garaging for two small cars. Outdoors, a deck makes the most of the view and a shaded courtyard provides a sheltered space for relaxation. Internet access is an added plus.

It’s close to the main road, 39 steps up in fact. So leave your car in the garage attached to the house and walk down to the pub and pizza place, restaurants – sushi, fish, fine and fashionable – and shops. Turn right on the main road and in 10 minutes you’re at Boulders, home of the African Penguin colony. Turn left and 10 minutes off is Long Beach (long, but never crowded), next to Simon’s Town station. Hop aboard a train and take a 10-minute trip to Kalk Bay, a fishing harbour village with a string of shops on its main road.

There’s fashion from Langa to Lima, décor, accessories, Africana, collectables, jewellery, antiques and memorabilia. And the food offerings are as varied: Harbour House has water-splashed picture windows overlooking the waves, and plenty of fresh fish and seafood on its menu; the Olympia Café is a crowdpleasing breakfast, brunch and lunch venue, with a bakery at back; the Brass Bell operates from a train parked off the station; Live Bait is Harbour House’s little sister down the stairs and Polana is another sibling, with Portuguese ancestry.

It’s on a cul-de-sac, so it’s quiet. In whale season (August to October), you’ll hear the giants breathing in the bay at night; all year round, you’ll turn over and go back to sleep as midshipmen whistle the various watches and duties of the early morning. Later, ships’ hooters announce the comings and goings of the frigates, tugs and subs you can see from your bedroom windows and deck.

There’s space for six in three rooms: a main bedroom with king-size bed, a second bedroom with two
close-as-a-kiss single beds, and a sunroom off the deck (with bar fridge for your pre-barbecue evening drinks), which has a double sleeper couch.

The décor’s charming. Beach-house style, it features natural shades and blues, echoing the sea and sand of a Cape coastal town. The linen’s white cotton for coolth, with light-weight duvets for summer and plenty of blankets and throws for cold weather times. Step out on to the deck from your room and watch the comings and goings in the harbour. Built-in cupboards are very generous for the longest stay.

The en suite bathroom features linen as fine as the bedding, with beach towels aplenty.
The second bedroom contains two single beds with easy access to the bathroom next door,
and lots of cupboard space.

The second bathroom, adjoining the second bedroom,
is across the passage from the third
bedroom/sunroom.

When you’re relaxing after a day out, there’s lots
to relax with: games for the children and a TV
with cable (DStv). Centrepiece of the lounge is
a fireplace, for when the winter cold bites,
and there are heaters in the bedrooms.

Step out of the sunroom door straight on to the deck.
Relax in the shade of the retractable awning.

There is a bar fridge for those lazy pre-barbecue
drinks on the deck whilst gulls wheel and cry in the
yacht basin just below you. This room also contains
a modern computer with 24/7 internet access.

The couch shown in the picture converts to a
double bed suitable for children or young adults.

Outside on the patio, there’s a kettle braai and a stainless steel barbecue for that special South African custom (buy yourself fish off the boats at Kalk Bay harbour), a hammock for siestas and a lounger for sun-bathing. It’s a child-safe, shaded space off the kitchen and dining room, sheltered when the local southeaster gets up speed.
You’ll find Dèjá View well equipped, with the obligatory stove, as well as a washing machine, tumble drier, dish washer, microwave and
double-door fridge/freezer.
The dining room table seats six people,
and there is a counter facing into the kitchen
for those casual morning breakfasts.

Dèjá View is serviced twice a week. If you need personal laundry or ironing done that’s no problem – ask the house help to do it after hours, for a small fee. Otherwise, there’s an excellent laundry in town.

No gym in Simon’s Town, but you’ll find personal trainers galore: left and right of the enclave there are steps going up and up and down again, for the best holiday workout! They hark back to a time when the houses on the slopes were linked by paths, not roads.

Pets are welcome. Transfers from the airport can be arranged.

Base rate for the house is R850 per night
(for a single person or two people sharing).
An extra R150 per person is charged thereafter
for each adult, and R100 for each child under 12
(the house sleeps six maximum).
A 50% deposit is required on making your reservation.
