There is much to do at Lekkerwijn and in the surrounding areas:
Visit the local wineries and museums. Drive to nearby monuments and gardens. Visit the grand homesteads of Boschendal, L'Omarins, and Plaisir de Merle, Rupert and Rothschild, and Graham Beck, which are all just
minutes away.

Visit the local historical towns including Franschhoek, Stellenbosch, and Paarl.

Go for walks above Franschhoek, on the mountainside, or on the Arboretum walk in Paarl along the Berg River.

Go for wine tasting on horseback though the Robertsvlei forests, or Trout fishing up at the head of the valley. For those interested, a visit to local development and empowerment projects will be rewarding.

For longer trips you can drive to Cape Town (50 minutes away) and visit the Peninsula, the Waterfront Development, the Aquarium, and the National Botanic Gardens at Kirstenbosch. Or drive to Hermanus (1 and a half-hours away) for whale watching.

For the experienced traveler, Lekkerwijn has that one extra facility: it is ideal to relax: read in the calming courtyard, stroll through the garden, sit beside the pool with a book with the peacocks and guinea fowl to charm you in the tranquil estates gardens.

Lekkerwijn is ideal for parties of up to a maximum
of 10-12 travelers.

Lekkerwijn is an historic Cape Dutch Homestead, the title of which was given to a Huguenot, Ari L'Ecrivant, in 1690. The homestead, along with others in the Drakenstein Valley, is well preserved and has been listed by de Bosdari in the 1940's and subsequently in Franzen and Cook in the late 1960's.

In 1895 H.E.V. Pickstone began purchasing farms for Cecil John Rhodes in this valley with a view to stabilizing the situation of bankrupt farmers and beginning a new industry - the export fruit industry. The valley became a predominantly export fruit growing area, and still produces significant volumes of soft citrus, plums and pears of the highest quality.

Having seen the condition of the Spanish Missions throughout California, H.E.V. (as he was known) recognized the need to preserve the old architecture in the Cape Colony. With Rhodes' active support for that goal, and with the architect, Sir Herbert Baker, many of the deteriorating homesteads in this valley were stabilized. At the same time small changes were made to Lekkerwijn (a dining hall, fireplace, wall cupboard, kitchen wing) which culminated in the addition of a bedroom wing in 1906. More additions followed through the years. Lekkerwijn was furnished by H.E.V. and in it he assembled a collection of pictures and furniture, which he found in the Cape and which he greatly admired for the extremely fine workmanship they, reflected.

H.E.V’s wife, a granddaughter from the Barry homestead in Swellendam - remained on in his home after his death in 1939, and eventually died in 1966, when Wendy Pickstone inherited the house and the family business. In all, over the past 90 years, the house has had two mistresses caring for it, and the house continues to be the background from which active lives of social and economic involvement are lived.

Wendy Pickstone remains the owner and is still resident on the property and provides fascinating information on the history and local valley. Wendy Pickstone’s son, Simon Pickstone-Taylor, is the Guest House manager and provides a superb level of professional care with individual attention for all the needs of each guest. Guests visiting here are able to glimpse something of this heritage of which we are extremely proud. We believe it provides a unique opportunity for persons interested in knowing more about the history of the Cape colony.

We believe Lekkerwijn is a successful combination of hospitality, historic interest, architectural merit and present day involvement.
