|Spookfontein – a wine and olive farm situated in the Hemel and Aarde valley – is home to an unbelievable selection of birdlife ranging from the gracious blue cranes to buzzards, owls and hoopoes. The farm has more than 100 hectares of fynbos stretching up the mountainside to border Hermanus’s Fernkloof nature reserve at its highest point.
||Spookfontein is a wonderful getaway offering the tranquility of huge expanses of fynbos and mountain walks and yet providing many activities for adults and children and accessibility to the Hemel and Aarde wine route and nearby Hermanus beaches.
|There are two cottages with spectacular views over the vineyards down the valley to the sea.
Both cottages sleep four in two comfortable double bedrooms with en suite bathrooms. There is also a farmhouse set amongst wide green lawns and ancient oak trees which can sleep 8 people. All the houses have the bedrooms and living rooms opening onto wide balconies and are fitted with fireplaces, braai facilities and fully equipped kitchens. Crisp white linen and fresh towels are provided.
|Activities include mountain biking, swimming in the dam and hiking within the farm or over the mountain to Hermanus through the nature reserve. The farm is an excellent spot for birdwatching and whilst walking the paths you might get an occasional glimpse of deer, porcupines or wild rabbits.
Nearby attractions are Moggs Country Cookhouse ( a popular local restaurant for lunches and dinners ), a selection of the finest wine farms and the town of Hermanus – famous for it’s whale watching and beaches - it is only a 15 minute drive from the farm. Spookfontein itself is releasing it’s first red wine vintage in 2005.
|Take the Hermanus turnoff from the N2, turn left just before Hermanus at the R 320
and travel 11.1km where you will see the stone farm gateposts on your right.
Driving time from Cape Town is approximately one hour 15 minutes.
