Situated at the southernmost tip of Africa, the Overberg stretches from Sir Lowry's Pass in the west to Tradouw Pass in the east and from Villiersdorp in the north to L'Agulhas in the south. The region is essentially rural dotted with a number of small towns and no large cities; the nearest city being Cape Town some 170 km from the centre of the region.

Bounded by mountain ranges in the west, north and east and the ocean in the south, the Overberg has a unique beauty of its own. From the rolling wheat fields to the majestic coast line, the Overberg is worth visiting if only for its very special beauty. This area offers some of the finest landbased whale watching in the world; hiking trails that take you amongst the splendour of the Protea floral kingdom; sporting activities such as paragliding, fishing, water sport, and more.

One of the most popular holiday towns in this region is Hermanus, sometimes called "The Riviera of the Overberg". This bustling resort provides an ideal playground for the rich and famous, many of whom possess fine properties here. Each year some 250 000 visitors descend upon Hermanus for the 10-day Whale Festival, held during the September Cape school holidays.
